âNOT NECESSARILY,â THE WOMAN REPLIED, GIVING ME A STRANGE look. âIt means she hasnât been admitted. She may be with one of the triage nurses.â
âHow can I find out?â
The woman continued searching.
âHere she is. It just popped up on the screen. Sheâs being processed into ICU.â
âWhich floor?â
She told me and pointed down a hallway that led to the elevators. I took several steps before looking back to see if Vince was following.
âSorry,â I said. âI feel responsible.â
âResponsible for what?â
âI donât know. Itâs just that it happened while I was at the house.â
âWhich is why youâre there. At least you know sheâs alive. What would have happened if you hadnât been there to call 911?â
Vinceâs words always had a calming effect on me. We found the waiting room for the ICU. The atmosphere of the room was a sharp contrast to the frantic activity in the ER. About ten people were doing what the sign over the door declaredâwaiting. Mrs. Bartlett wasnât among them.
âHer daughter should have been here by now,â I said.
As soon as the words left my lips, Mrs. Bartlett and her husband, Ken, came into the room from the patient area. I barely recognized her without her makeup. She saw me and slightly raised her hand. I came over to her.
âHow is she?â I asked anxiously.
âStable for the moment,â Mrs. Bartlett replied. âTheyâll have to run tests to determine the extent of the damage.â
I introduced them to Vince.
âMother mentioned you the other day,â Mrs. Bartlett said to Vince. âAre you the one who brought by the flowers she put in the blue parlor?â
âYes.â
âMother loves fresh flowers.â
âIâm sorry I was so disorganized when I talked to you on the phone,â I said.
âI was disappointed,â Mrs. Bartlett replied, staring directly into my eyes. âI thought you had more experience dealing with medical emergencies.â
I couldnât remember ever telling her that I had emergency medical experience.
âShe called 911,â her husband said.
âAfter I told her to do it,â Mrs. Bartlett answered crisply. âYou can spend the night at the house, but Iâll review the situation tomorrow. If Mother has an extended stay in the hospital or goes to a nursing home, there wonât be any need for you to be there.â
My head jerked back. I thought about myself, but also Mrs. Fairmontâs Chihuahua.
âUh, what about Flip?â
âThat dog has controlled Motherâs life. He wonât do the same to mine.â
I didnât get a chance to ask about me. Mrs. Bartlett walked past and left the room. Her husband trailed after her.
âWow,â Vince said. âDid she just kick you out?â
âI think so.â
âWhy is she so upset with you?â
I slumped down in the nearest chair and told him. I left out some of the specific words Mrs. Bartlett used when yelling at me over the phone.
âWhat am I going to do?â
Vinceâs answer was as focused as one of his legal memos at work.
âFind another place to live,â he said. âThereâs a vacancy in my comÂplex. Yesterday I saw a sign on the bulletin board in the laundry room that a student at the college wants to sublease his apartment for the rest of the summer.
